Periodontal Laser Therapy

When you see a beautiful smile, you probably notice the straight, white teeth. But you might overlook the reason that the smile looks so wonderful - the gums. Healthy gums are absolutely essential for an attractive, comfortable, functional smile.

While they make look healthy, even the most attractive smiles are at risk. Today, over 85 percent of the population have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. However, most people don't realize they have it.

The problem is that periodontal disease is very elusive. Often, it is misdiagnosed or simply ignored. There may not be any obvious symptoms. Gums may recede, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay, abscesses and loss - without any bleeding, tenderness or other indications of a problem.

But many people have at least minor symptoms, which can include: Bleeding when brushing or flossing Puffiness or tenderness of the gums Halitosis (bad breath) Loose-feeling teeth.

But there is good news. Gum disease is easily treatable. Even reversible. And best of all, with the advancements made in modern dentistry, especially the use of lasers for gentle treatment and antibiotics to help kill dangerous bacteria, periodontal therapy is more comfortable, thorough and effective than ever before.

Periodontal treatment used to be an unpleasant experience at best. Diseased gums were scraped away - a process that was painful and often required anesthesia and an uncomfortable period of healing.

Today, lasers are used in both the detection and care of periodontal therapy. Modern laser therapy gently and quickly removes scar tissue in periodontal pockets, sealing the affected area as it passes. Most patients undergo treatment without any anesthesia at all. The laser also kills bacteria causing the disease and promotes the reattachment of the gum to tooth. Antibiotics are also applied directly to treated gums to help kill bacteria that cause the disease.

While treatment is very effective, good oral hygiene is also important to the prolonged health of your smile. You should brush at least two to three times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Daily flossing, fluoride rinses and an oral irrigator also are important. These preventive measures in combination with your in-office treatment should have your mouth restored to perfect health in no time!

In short, periodontal disease is treatable, even at an advanced stage, to help you keep your teeth and improve your health.
